We’ve been glamping in Wales as part of our BIG Wales Road Trip!
How about a spot of glamping in Wales!
As part of our big EC adventure to Wales we we were lucky enough to base ourselves at the Wales glamping haven created by our close friends at Eco Retreats.
We sometimes forget that in the UK we are blessed with some amazing wildlife, fantastic scenery and an abundance of Eco Travel options to rival anywhere in the world. No better is this illustrated than with a spot glamping in Wales at Eco Retreats. So with a tight schedule, we headed out on the road.
The glamping option was perfect for us, giving us the little extras we’d need, (think wood fired outdoor bath, warm beds etc) to keep us in tip top condition for our filming trip, and also because the yurts and tipis are amazing!
The Dyfi Forest
Located deep in the Dyfi Forest Eco retreats collection of yurts and tipis really are a retreat away from the stresses of modern life. The Dyfi Forest is located mainly to the north of the Afon Dyfi between the towns of Dolgellau to the north and Machynlleth to the south. Covering 6,000 ha of amazing Welsh countryside. Peaks dot through the forested hillsides and fast flowing mountain streams run through the rocky valleys. It’s an amazing place and it’s hard to believe it’s just a drive away.
The Eco Retreats yurts and tipis
Michael, who runs Eco Retreats with his partner Cha-Nan, has been making and living in tipis since his younger days and is totally committed to living a sustainable lifestyle. Cha-Nan comes from a top-end hospitality background in London and mashing this two skill sets together has resulted in a true glamping experience that’s both kind on you and kind on the environment.
The yurts at Eco Retreats have been hand crafted by local experts and the skill on hand is apparent, they are truly beautiful works of art. In true Mongolian style there’s no better experience than looking up through the yurt wheel to see a beautiful, starry night untainted by the light pollution of towns and cities.
Exploring near Eco Retreats
There’s a huge amount to do in the Dyfi Forest with something to suit everyone one. From adrenaline fuelled descents on a mountain bike to hikes and walks through the amazing scenery. Or if you simply just want to chill fill the bath, light the fire and take a nice relaxing open air bath outside your tipi!
We’d recommend heading over to the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT). Ahead of it’s time the centre was founded in 1974 by a group of enthusiasts when green principles certainly weren’t mainstream. The centre has inspired a generation and many practical ideas to the climate change challenge originated from CAT. Today, the centre’s beautiful new School of the Environment runs excellent day courses on practical topics such as earth ovens, composting toilets, raw food, upcycling, traditional crafts and harnessing renewable energy.
We had an amazing time in Wales thanks in no small part to the knowledge that we could head back to our tipi and unwind. The sustainable efforts of people like Michael at Eco Retreats and everyone else we met on our Welsh adventure are amazing and inspiring. The perfect place to get away from it all on your Eco Holiday.
