Spotting Pretty Polly Down Under
Bird watching isn’t just for your mum and dad anymore. It’s big news in the eco community down under, where rare parrot spotting has become an obsession.
Hang up your Michael Kors jacket, and grab Dad’s anorak instead. Yep, bird watching is not just for the olds in the family, it’s the hottest word amongst eco warriors Down under – all because of a new sighting of a particular parrot. Want to know more? Want to know more? Okay parrot spotting fans, you got it the first time…
Blokes in hats
Birdwatchers, twitchers, ornithologists, and general boring blokes wearing anoraks – actually parrot spotting Jackaroos in cork hats – were in a bit of a flap recently, with the first verified sighting of a very rare bird in Australia. The night parrot, a bird which was actually thought to be extinct, was duly photographed – proving the first verified sighting of the bird in Western Australia for more than a century.
Four strapping blokes from Broome, who have dedicated the past seven years to find the night parrot – is there NOTHING else to do there?! – finally got the chance to show the world their findings, and proof that the night parrot exists.
Ecologically, what does this mean? A lot, as it happens. At least, for the mining industry, it could mean huge changes. Should there be groups of night parrots, in various habitats across this area of Western Australia, then they would be extremely vulnerable to any localised habitat destruction – and therefore new legislation restricting any mining would need to be implemented. Good news for eco warriors everywhere, and great news, of course, for the night parrot.
